Every year, billions of pounds in benefits and support go unclaimed across the UK
Every year, billions of pounds in benefits and support go unclaimed across the UK, not because people aren't entitled, but because they don't know the help exists, find the system too complex to navigate, or feel discouraged from applying at all.
According to Policy in Practice's latest Missing Out report, an estimated £24 billion in income-related benefits and social tariffs will go unclaimed in 2025/26, with more than seven million households missing out on support they're entitled to. The gap is driven by a mix of factors: low awareness of what's available, benefit rules that change frequently, application processes that feel confusing or intrusive, and stigma that puts people off claiming in the first place.
