People in Hillingdon often come to us at their lowest moments. Many arrive frightened, overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. They bring letters they cannot read, debts they cannot manage and trauma they can no longer carry alone.

When we met Amira (not her real name), a single mother of two, she was exhausted in every way. She was living with a chronic illness, recovering from domestic abuse and had been dismissed from work while on sick leave. Her income collapsed and she fell into deep financial difficulty.
She faced £7,000 in rent arrears. Her home was damp and affecting her health. Debt letters piled up. Phone calls filled her with dread.
She told us, "I just did not have the strength to deal with anything."
Through our Hillingdon Food Bank Project, we supported Amira to regain stability and hope. We helped her secure Council Tax Support worth £1,084 a year, apply for a £3,900 Discretionary Housing Payment, request a Work Capability Assessment, and save £1,188 a year through social tariffs. We also contacted Amira's housing association to arrange repairs and helped her get a three month payment break from debt collectors.
Little by little, things improved. Amira's arrears stopped increasing. Her home repairs were booked in. Her phone no longer triggered fear. She began to feel confident again.
Amira told us, "I don't feel alone anymore."
