HECA is a modern advice agency committed to high quality standards. It is made up of a core generalist service at three bureaux based in Hayes, Ruislip and Uxbridge.

Volunteering

The Citizens Advice service has over 20,000 volunteers from diverse backgrounds, who have a wide variety of skills and experience.  Volunteers undertake training for the many different roles available.

CAB volunteering can be challenging and immensely rewarding. Most volunteers report getting enormous satisfaction from the work they do, feeling they are able to make a real difference to people’s lives.

Calling all Students!

Training
All volunteers receive high quality training relevant to their role, together with on-going guidance and support to ensure that they are able to reach their full potential and provide a high quality service to the general public.  You will need to be reliable, open-minded, non-judgemental and able to listen, learn and work in a team.

Gateway Assessor Training

Gateway Assessors Conduct assessment interviews to determine client advice needs and refer them to the relevant source of advice, or supply relevant information using Citizens Advice Adviceguide website, leaflets and fact sheets. This is a key role in helping clients to resolve issues and empowering them to deal with problems.

Trainees attending for 2 days per week will receive mentoring and support and be required to undertake a variety of training modules on the skills needed and the main enquiry areas.

Advisor Training
Advisers are required to complete training for the Certificate in Generalist Advice Work and a volunteer attending for 2 days per week will generally take a minimum of 1 year to achieve the Certificate.  You will gain the foundation skills and experience needed to be an Adviser by completing the Gateway Assessor training for an initial period of 4 – 6 months before moving onto Adviser training.

The trainee will receive mentoring and support from a Training Supervisor and will be required to undertake:

·         A variety of modules relating to Gateway Assessor and Adviser skills and the main enquiry areas 

·         Computer based e-learning modules 

·         Attend Gateway Assessor and Adviser Certificate Course training days in Central London

·         Attend further 1 day enquiry area training courses, usually based in Central London

Adviser Training – Post Certificate
Advisers who have gained the Certificate in Generalist Advice Work will be required to participate in:

·         Regular update training to build and maintain knowledge in the main enquiry areas (in-house and in Central London

·         Computer based e-learning modules

·         Occasional skills-based training

·         Annual appraisals of their training and development needs

Volunteering Opportunities:-

The Bureau has volunteers from all cultural backgrounds, enabling clients to discuss problems in their own language with advisors who understand the cultural differences within each of the communities.  Although the vast majority of CAB workers are trained volunteers, opportunities do arise for permanent paid positions.

The  CAB is looking to recruit more volunteers to reflect the community served in order to promote equal opportunities in the fullest sense.
