Case Study:-
A single male client, age 60 years, living alone, has a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia but does not agree with this diagnosis or the medication prescribed.  He stated that he does not want to comply with treatment or medication but that he goes along with the process to avoid being admitted to hospital.

He had been a home owner but his property was re-possessed due to mortgage arrears.

He now lives in council accommodation, and at the time of his benefit check he was receiving Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit and just £59.15 per week in Income Support (IS).

He was advised to claim Pension Credit (PC) instead of IS and assisted with an application for Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

As a result he was awarded PC, backdated to his 60th birthday, and DLA middle rate care and lower rate mobility, which increased his weekly income from £59.15 IS to £167.50pw PC (including a severe disability addition) plus £60.25 DLA.

With an overall weekly increase in his income of £168.60 (or 385%) he will now be better off by £8,767 in the course of a year.
