Case Study:-
A white, female, married service user
suffering severe depression is a private tenant with three children living
with her, two in full time education and one in receipt of Jobseekers
Allowance (JSA). The couple are in receipt of JSA, Child Tax Credit, Child
Benefit and full Housing and Council Tax Benefit.
Due to her
disability, she was unable to look for employment and needed constant care
from her husband which, in turn, restricted her husband from seeking
employment. She applied for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) but was
unsuccessful.
Our Adviser successfully appealed against the DLA decision and the service
user was awarded DLA care and mobility components of £62.60pw which was
backdated with a one-off payment of £751.20. Our Adviser also assisted
the couple in making a joint claim for Income Support and her husband to
apply for Carers Allowance, thereby increasing their income by a further
£98.00pw and £50.55pw respectively.
The service user also had debts of £1,727 owed to Three Valley Water and
£828 to British Gas and was unable to meet the repayments. Our adviser
negotiated with their creditors to accept manageable repayments and
applied to British Gas and Three Valleys Water for grants to assist the
service user with repayment of the debts.
